Gua Sha

Gua Sha is an East Asian technique that is used to reduce pain, stiffness, fatigue, insomnia, tension, and scar tissue, to increase mobility, to remove stagnant blood, lymh fluid, Qi (energy) and metabolic wastes, and to help maintain healthy circulation throughout the body. It can also be used to treat and prevent the common cold, flu, and bronchitis.

The application of this technique is done by first applying a light layer of oil to the skin. Next the therapist will use a thin, flat tool with a rounded edges a few inches in size and apply pressure in motions over the skin. This technique is used for the full body lymph detox and facial rejuvenation massage.

Frequently Asked Questions
Where do you perform your treatments?

We have a private residential studio but we are also happy to travel to you so you can enjoy a relaxing session in the comfort of your own home.

In home massage is available within a 25 mile radius of Minneapolis, requires a room that is clean and has an open working space of 6’ by 8’, and is a non-smoking home.

What makes us different than other massage therapists?
Our custom designed sessions address the root of your concerns and can provide lasting relief that you may not have had success with elsewhere.
What makes Shiatsu different than other forms of massage?
Shiatsu incorporates comfortable stretching and range of motion techniques as well as acupressure techniques using fingers and palms that are typically not found in other therapies. Shiatsu is “clothes-on” therapy so wearing loose, comfortable clothes like sweat pants or yoga pants will make your experience more enjoyable. Because Shiatsu moves a lot of toxins out of the muscles, drink 1-2 liters of water, try to relax the rest of the day and, if possible, take a bath with sea salt and essential oils.
What should I know before I receive a Therapeutic Massage?
Therapeutic massage incorporates a variety of deeper tissue techniques that relieve chronic pain and muscle tension.
What is best to do after our session to help the process?

Drink 1-2 liters of water, avoid strenuous activity for the remainder of the day and, if possible, take a bath with sea salt and essential oils.

How would Craniosacral Therapy help me?

Craniosacral addresses the flow of cerebral-spinal fluid, the deepest system in the body. The optimization of this system helps to reduce headaches and migraines and other discomfort from head and spine trauma.

If I don’t have head or back issues, is Craniosacral still worth receiving?

Yes! Even if you don’t have any specific issues that Craniosacral is great for addressing, you will still feel deeply relaxed, refreshed and clear headed.

Does Gua Sha assist other forms of detoxing?
Yes! Our Lymph Detoxing technique using Gua Sha works great with other cleanses or detoxing to deepen the effects and help to reset the body’s organ systems.
Can Reiki help with recovery from injury or surgery?
Yes! Reiki is so gentle that anyone recovering from injury or surgery can benefit from Reiki. Major benefits from those recovering are reduced pain, faster healing times, increased appetite and increased quality of sleep.
Is Cupping Therapy painful?
Cupping uses “negative” pressure or pulls the skin and muscles away from the body, so it does feel different than other forms of bodywork. Even though cupping can leave temporary circles of coloration on the skin, the treatment itself is not painful.

I am so grateful that the chiropractic office recommended Leah to me, and I can only give her praises for her therapy skills and knowledge. She has been a tremendous help to my body and me!! I was working at a very physical job when I first started with Leah, and she would work out all of the tension, stress, and knots. I don’t think I would have made it at that job as long as I did without Leah’s help. I was seeing Leah two times a month, and would have benefited from seeing her even more…she was a live saver. I have since changed jobs and I still see Leah once a month to help with maintenance. I would highly recommend Leah to others. She is professional, excellent at her job, her overall willingness to help everyone is apparent during each of my massages. I participated in a Mud Run and I pulled a muscle, and Leah worked diligently to get my muscles back to normal! I don’t know how I would have gotten through that without her help.

As a doctor of chiropractic, I often have discomforts develop in my upper back and neck from the physical and emotional stresses that come with running my practice. Through a professional colleague's recommendation, I went to be evaluated and treated by Ian. After taking a history and examination, he was able to locate and successfully treat the soft tissue issues that were leading to the pain I was feeling. His manual skills as a practitioner are second to none. In addition to routinely supplying me with his beneficial forms of soft tissue work, Ian introduced me to his energy work skills and these have been very effective in helping me to balance my emotional stresses as well. Because of the successful care that I have received from Ian since beginning care, I have and will continue to refer patients, friends and family members to him for treatments.

I first started working with Leah when I was introduced to her five years ago when I was receiving treatment from a chiropractor for hip issues and tight I-T band muscles. Leah always began her sessions by first welcoming me and asking how my day was going. She walked me to her therapy room there we would then have a dialogue on how my body was physically feeling what I felt were some of my problem areas that she should focus in on. I always appreciated this dialogue because I always felt very comfortable speaking to Leah to let her know areas that were bothering me. I saw Leah monthly and through these monthly sessions Leah really began to know my body and my problem areas. If I told her my hips were bothering me, she knew exactly the area to tend to, if I told her my shoulders were sore, she knew exactly what to do. This was wonderful, as I didn't have to explain each and every time, she just knew. Through Leah's help, my life was given back to me and I am able to live life to the fullest. I am pain free and enjoying it with my husband and son.

I met Ian approximately 3 years ago. At that time, I was experiencing significant reduced range of motion in my left shoulder due to a mastectomy from 12 years ago. After 2 sessions with Ian, I achieved complete range of motion! I also have a significantly handicapped daughter who cannot stand, walk, see or hear (without the use of hearing aids). The physical and emotional demands required for her care are challenging. Ian has been instrumental in alleviating my upper and lower back pain caused by lifting her. He has also provided me with recommendations for breathing and relaxation techniques to reduce the stress I experience. Ian is an extremely knowledgeable and effective massage therapist who cares deeply about improving the quality of life for his clients, both mind and body. His ability to diagnose and treat the "whole person" is second to none! As a result of my work with Ian, I am better able to deal with the daily physical and emotional demands I encounter.

I first came to know Leah after a car accident in which a driver ran a stop light and t-boned me. I started dealing with neck, shoulder and some back pain and needed! I used to go to massage therapy after my neck fusion many years ago. I understood and appreciated the benefits of it. A friend of mine highly recommended Leah so I made an appointment to see her. She greeted me with a warm, friendly smile and took great care to understand what my concerns were and how she could best help me. She described some of the treatments she provided, including: massage therapy, cupping and guasha (a traditional Chinese medicine treatment of scraping massage). At the beginning of each session, Leah made sure to ask how I was doing and what areas were of concern that day. I was grateful she took the time to do that. I've been to other massage therapists who just have you lie down and they start massaging you. Leah always took the time to find out what was going on with me, which made me feel very comfortable and cared for. The music she played during the session was very soothing and helped center me during each session. I found that to be a benefit, as my daily life gets so busy that I rarely get a chance to take a break. Leah is a wonderful massage therapist (and a good friend). She's warm, caring, kind, compassionate, full of empathy and a great person.

Before visiting Ian I went to many different doctors, physical therapists, and received cortisone shot for the pain in my arm. A friend recommended Ian to me. I was desperate for some help and I gave him a try. I started seeing Ian weekly as he massaged and used energy work to begin healing on my arm. During the sessions I was able to get to a place of deep relaxation. I felt some relief even after the first session. He recommended a support brace to wear while I worked in my office. The most significant part of my healing was his recommendation to begin a meditation practice. This put me in touch with a group in my community that helped settle my mind and open my heart. I continued to see Ian for a few months and now my arm and elbow are completely healed.

I decided to work with Leah to help with my anxiety and mental health. I needed a treatment where I could relax and refocus. I think the most unique part of the process is the spiritual aspect, in the sense that Leah goes into the treatments wanting to help clients improve and knowing that her work really impacts their lives. We take time to talk about how things are going in my life before starting the massage. Each session, Leah asks if there is anything specific to work on that time. Working with Leah resulted in both physical and mental benefits. The massage therapy relaxes my body and mind. I always feel like I can think more clearly and have a better attitude after our sessions. It centers me, which is incredibly beneficial and affects how I interact with people and problem solve. I’ve learned that it is so important to take care of myself, and meeting with Leah is one of the main ways I do that. I really count on Leah and the effects of the sessions as a crucial member of my support system, and I appreciate how much she cares about her work and clients.

I was drawn to work with Ian for spiritual growth and energy work. Being a busy, working mom with two teenagers, I often disregarded my own self care, not feeling important enough to take the time for me. I remember one of my first sessions with Ian, he worked a great deal on my abdominal area. Over the next few weeks I could feel the shift within my conscious mind, how I was making better, mindfulness choices about how I thought about myself, and the choices of what I put into my body. Often times when I was in "crisis" Ian, without hesitation, would fit me into his schedule. He always made feel like my "issues" were worth caring for. Ian's sessions are always very personal and individualized, not a routine but a true caring for the soul.

Through Ian I was introduced to the world of meditation and beyond. Before working with him, I knew there was "something more" I was searching for, but didn't know what it was or how to get there. Over the years, he has presented many spiritual tools and avenues I didn't know existed, and may not have found on my own. Since beginning my spiritual journey, though not the easiest one, discovering and living who I truly am has by far been the most rewarding.

Before meeting Leah every part of my body was in severe pain, all the time. It was extremely hard for me to function at my job and at home. Leah started out slow and easy. She would progress with more pressure a little at a time until I could handle it. As she learned new techniques she would get my permission to try them on me. They worked wonders! Now my severe pain is less frequent and I am able to function better both at work and at home. I am able to go on trips, drive, and still be able to enjoy the trip. Leah is always will to go to great lengths to learn new techniques and I am always willing for her to try them on me. Her continued growth as a practitioner always helps me tremendously, as many practitioners are now learning and growing the way she is. Leah has been more than just the greatest massage therapist in the world, but she has been a wonderful friend and confidant.
